COMMUNITY EDUCATION

At Progreso Community Center, we believe that knowledge and information are power and must not be monopolized only by a few. We believe that everyone has valuable knowledge to share with others and that no one should live marginalized from the process of production, transmission, reception, or exchange of information. Knowledge and information are tools for people to free themselves from exploitation and oppression. In our effort to develop the critical consciousness of our community through education, we use the principles of popular education to motivate our community members to engage in collective actions to implement social changes.

We work with and for the community. Our work with our community is based on activities that can build the capacity of our community members in an environment where the exchange of knowledge is reciprocally appreciated in any social context. Our work for the community focuses on collective and long-term benefits for our community and the community in general through our programs.

“AN EDUCATION DIVORCED FROM ITS CONTEXT IS WORTHLESS” Henry A. Giroux

“...[it is] of great importance to make our students adopt an active role in the classroom, as principal critics of education models, of their teachers, of the problems and current social solutions. It seems to be hard, but it is an urgent task that must be implemented. Firstly, we should make them start to reflect, then participate, and finally, propose solutions to our great social dilemmas."    Omar Bandala Fonseca
